A couple samples from an event at Spruce Meadows for The Masters which I've caricatured at for the last four years in Calgary representing The Bank Of Montreal. Love this event with all the color, horses and interesting guests around me. For caricatures to be drawn at your event, please contact Calgary Caricaturist Kelly Gannon at kelstudios@telus.net

Magazine write-up
It was such a pleasure to be showcased in a magazine The writer Alex Frazer-Harrison was a pleasure to talk to and the photographer Kurtis Kristianson helped make me look alright!!!
Incidentally, about a week or so after Kurtis took my photographs, he was involved in a light airplane crash that he was able to walk away from....all the while Kurtis was snapping pictures on his decent downwards.....

Paul Revere and the Raiders
When I was young....Paul Revere and the Raiders were my favorite band, to get to caricature and then meet them was a treat for me! Nice guys...all of them, and they still sound great. The drummer emailed me to let me know they used the group cartoon-caricature for their promo picture while playing in the Caribbean on a cruise ship.

Peter Noone
NooneFest is a 60's concert in Philadelphia headlining the sixties band "Herman's Hermits." I was asked by their management to do this tee shirt in a retro cartoon style, which I love doing.

Caveman Cartoon
A cartoonists' club used to have a blog where we would submit a cartoon subject once a week....that way we could see other cartoonists work and see our own on the web with other cartoons beside them so we could either compare or get inspiration! This one was obviously a caveman with the invention of the wheel (kind of like the very first Segway....).

Caricaturing Kids
Caricaturing kids is an important segment of a party caricaturists' business. The rule of thumb I have is simply to draw the kids as cute....my personal belief is that I don't have to over exaggerate for kids....I make them cartoony. I think speed is quite important as well when caricaturing children, as you can understand that it can be a bit uncomfortable for them being drawn. Above a a couple samples of caricatures drawn in Calgary that usually take approx. four minutes.

Chubby Checker
Chubby Checker always had a great smile and fun tunes to twist to....not that I ever did The Twist, but millions of people did in the sixties. I drew this cartoon of Chubby Checker and sent it to him and he emailed back to me a thanks...though he jokingly said it looked more like "Baby Face." ( whoever that is????) He was a nice guy on the email.
If you're old enough, you'll remember some of his 60's hits like "Lets Twist Again," and a song Disney brought out for the cartoon "The Little Mermaid," entitled "Limbo Rock".

Editorial Cartoons
The 1990's were a great time for me as an editorial cartoonist. I was thrilled each time I seen my cartoon published in the newspaper, but then the shine started to wear off after about three years....always having to read negative news (what else does a newspaper sell?). The deadlines! Oh the deadlines....sometimes I was up until 1:00AM finishing up a cartoon before the deadline, only to see the next morning a spelling mistake that had to be fixed.
While I was trying to find a way out and still try to draw cartoons for a living, I was invited to an NCN (now called ISCA) convention that had Jack Davis from Mad Magazine as a special guest speaker. Jack Davis is my all time favorite cartoonist, I jumped at the chance and flew down to Coco Beach, Florida where I seen caricaturists draw people in mere minutes....I was hooked....and here I am a couple decades later still doing just that!

Magazine Caricature
I was asked by a magazine (Airdrie Life) to draw a cartoon-caricature for an article in their magazine. I had first did the cartoon in digital, then wasn't happy with it, then re-did the cartoon in Copic Markers and liked the results.

Cartoon Hockey Crest
A project done about 15 years ago, for a work place hockey team. They wanted the Zamboni to look a bit menacing...not easy as they're just big clumsey looking machines that clean the ice! The cartoon was stiched onto the crest, and most important, the client was happy!

Here's a fun studio piece I drew for our Mayor, Peter Brown and a lawyer friend of his. (lawyer is the fellow with the beard). I drew the caricatures in Copic marker and Prismacolor, then framed it. Our Mayor had a chuckle over the cartoon-caricature.

Calgary Caricatures
Drawing event caricatures in Calgary is the mainstay of my business...I just love when I get a couple of guests with a sense of humour like these two gentlemen above. (They actually wear a suit and tie at their day jobs). This event was held at Flames Central for an oil company from Europe with a 70's theme....thus explains the attire on the guests above. There was a 70's live band with mirror balls throughout the venue and lots of afros and bellbottom pants to be seen that evening.

BMW
I'm selling my company car....a great little BMW...why, I've decided I need a bit more room and am going for a......mini-van! I can just see your faces crinkle when you read that! Yes, the BMW is really quite a driving experience, but time to move on. I'm letting my Daughter sell it for me, as when the buyer comes to pick it up, I might just change my mind......or snivel a bit anyway....

Pirate Prints
I drew a couple of pirate prints that are/were for sale, signed by myself. First I bought brown paper, burnt and ripped the edges, drew lines on them, then used a tan and dark brown Prismacolor pen to color around the dark lines..... I then mounted the paper on a thick black piece of paper.
For the heads, I just drew the pirate heads on white paper and colored them in with Copic and Prismacolor pens, cut them out with scissors, then glued them to the brown paper.
After all that, I scanned them and digitally colored them in with watercolor and tried to always keep them a bit "cartoony." Pirates have to be one of the most colorful, fun characters to cartoon!

Tee Shirt Cartoons
An American company had me draw this cartoon for them with the "Angry Birds" thought in mind. I'm not sure how they got around that, but it was a spin-off of the Baltimore Football team. I've never caricatured football players to resemble birds before.....

Calgary Stampede is a great time for caricature artists! I usually bring in a caricature artist to help me during the ten days. Usually events start at about 7:00am and go quite late into the evening. It CAN be challenging at times to get from one event to another with Calgary's traffic congestion. Above are a few samples from Stampede 2012 drawn by yours truely. This year Emily Anthony from Philidelphia flew in to help me out...thanks Emily!

A great friend of mine, Faith Wood of "Inspiring Minds" asked if I could come up with a quick cartoon for a talk that Faith was giving. Faith does talks on conflict management and had these made into brochures for her seminar. You can view Faith's website at www.imind.ca
